Description
This is a rather nice, never circulated, silver
"50 Penniä"
from near the end of the Russian
"Grand Duchy of Finland"
. It was struck in 1916 during the reign of Czar Nicholas II. He was the
"Grand Duke"
of Finland as well as Czar of
"All the Russias"
until March of 1917 when his reign came to an abrupt end.
One of the consequences of the Napoleonic Wars was the Russian acquisition of Finland from Sweden. In 1809 Finland became an autonomous Grand Duchy in the Russian Empire and remained as such until the Russian revolution of 1917 during World War I.
Weight: 2.54 Grams, 18.6 Millimeters, .750 Silver. Mintage: 4,752,000.

Obverse:
Russian double-headed
"Imperial Eagle"
holding scepter and cross topped orb of state with the arms of Finland enclosed in an order chain on its breast. • S for the mint official Isak Gustaf Sundell who served from 1912 until 1947.
Reverse:
50 • PENNIÄ • 1916 • Oak wreath.
The Coin:
A choice little coin, it saw no use and has very few marks. The luster is brilliant and despite the fact that someone with a dirty hand picked it up, and it has toned there, at least they did it on the edge and it has not been cleaned. As grading is subjective, please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
